A little bit dark, a little bit edgy, this story explores folklore and myth while making things scientifically plausible... well... fictionally plausible that is.
Three young men burst into a late night diner and kill everyone inside, except for a young despairing waitress. Lesha Druse was trying to get back on her feet—having just lost her mother in a terrible car accident, she was already living a nightmare—exactly what the savage brood was looking for; a wounded soul.
The Rubix have unlocked the secrets behind little colored crystals that when ingested in series, cause unearthly characteristics in the host—changes that turn humans into… something stronger. With bodies engineered to enhance and preserve, unbreakable bones, impenetrable skin, and super-attuned senses, the Rubix is lethal and they are about to introduce Lesha to their world. But to fracture her soul, they have to kill her spirit. Unfortunately for Lesha, when the Rubix claim you as one of their own, death is the only way out.
Caleb is a young man with a complicated past. He is living proof that the Rubix can be completely rehabilitated—made human again—a secret that must be kept hidden at all costs. He is an anomaly, a deviation from the norm. The only reason he’s still alive is because he’s playing by the rules. Conforming to the code of conduct and playing the part of a good Ambassador, Caleb’s loyalty to his movement is challenged after he’s assigned to the group responsible for investigating the waitress’s disappearance. He knows he can rehabilitate her—and do for another Rubix what his mentor did for him. He wants to save the waitress—he needs to—but playing this game is entering dangerous territory, and it will make him the target of both groups.
Meanwhile, Lesha’s evolution as a Rubix host is painful and she learns that the punishment for running away is quite severe. The group leader, Adam, is a perfected Rubix host—an immortal. But he is falling in love with Lesha. He has never allowed himself to feel love for another person before. She touches a part of his heart that he thought to be as dead as his soul. He’d been dead to the world for so long and like out of a dream, life deposited an Angel in his lap, and he has no idea what to do now. Adam breaks things, he breaks people—how will he not break her? If he’s not very careful… she will be his undoing.
When catalyst crystals are leaked to the opposition and used to create a new weapon—the Ambassadors know that victory will soon be theirs. But betrayal blurs the line between good and evil. Caleb soon realizes that Lesha’s abductor is the same man who killed his mentor and he wants revenge. To survive this battle, and save his friends’ lives, Caleb has to entrust his secret to the people who may turn on him, and use his knowledge of the Rubix to end this battle once and for all.
